Iran floods: Thousands evacuate homes as heavy rain forecast

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said last week that USA sanctions - reimposed after Washington quit a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers - were impeding aid efforts to flood-stricken towns and villages.

Dozens of villages and towns have been evacuated in southern Iran as authorities issued warnings for a fresh round of flooding in the regions bordering Iraq, home to a number of rivers and dams.

Exceptionally heavy rains since March 19 have flooded some 1,900 cities and villages, killing 62 people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars of damage to Iranian agriculture, leaving aid agencies struggling to cope.

Gholamreza Shariati, the provincial governor, told state TV that rescue teams are taking residents to nearby shelters, including three army barracks.

Seid emphasized that part of the fields of the Golestan province affected by the flood is still under water.

Aid agencies are struggling to cope with the scale of the crisis and Iran's state budget is under pressure due to USA sanctions on energy and banking.

The head of Iran›s elite Revolutionary Guards reiterated the armed forces "were using all their power" to minimize the damage in Khuzestan.

Two days earlier, Pompeo extended condolences to the victims of the flooding in Iran but blamed its government for the disaster.

"These floods once again show the level of Iranian regime mismanagement in urban planning and in emergency preparedness.

We stand ready to provide any humanitarian assistance required", he said in a tweet.

The humanitarian package by Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) includes high capacity flood control pumps for dewatering large amounts of water, pharmaceuticals, foodstuff and other items. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has described those U.S. attempts as "economic terrorism".

Also, the British Red Cross plans to supply aid and Turkey deployed supplies.
