Sony finally allows PSN Online ID changes

So, you'll be pleased to know that Sony has announced that as of today you can change your PSN username, which is no doubt a long-awaited feature for all Playstation users. Enter the online ID of your choice and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the ID change. If you do not own a PS4, you can not change your ID through PS3 or Vita.

The post also notes that PSN ID changes aren't supported by either PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita systems or games. True, my user ID was not almost as horrifying as others that you would see online, but it still needed to be fixed. In addition to this, Sony has put together a list of games that may be impacted by the PSN name change.

Q: How many times can I change my ID?

According to a blog post by Sony's Social Media Director, Sid Shuman "the first time you change your ID the service is free, but after that you will need to pay $9.99 / £7.99 (around AU$15), unless you're PlayStation Plus member, in which case it will cost you $4.99 / £3.99 (around AU$7)".

If you do encounter these issues, you can simply revert back to your previous Online ID, which PlayStation say should solve most problems.

PlayStation 4 users can finally change their PSN Online ID starting today in North America and tomorrow in Europe. Potential risks include losing progress in certain games, some games may not function properly, and you may even lose content (even paid for content) for certain games.

The company also released another (much longer) list of titles that are known to have less-critical issues. While "the large majority of most actively played PS4 games support the feature", games published before April 1, 2018 may not be compatible with new online IDs.

A full compatibility list can be found here, as well as a FAQ that explains more specifics around the process. That said, Sony does not guarantee all games fully support the feature.

Child accounts can not change their online ID. This will make it easier for your friends to notice your ID change. We recommend that you check this list of tested games before you make the actual change. PlayStation admits "we expect major issues to occur only in a small number of games".
