John’s basketball: Bobby Hurley top candidate to replace Chris Mullin

As St. John's begins an unexpected search for a new basketball coach, Rothstein quickly followed up with a report Bobby Hurley is atop the list of candidates to replace Mullin. Athletic Mike Cragg director announced the decision, Tuesday, April 9, 2019 saying in a statement the team "progressed well" during Mullin's four years.

"Coach Mullin restored excitement to our men's basketball program and represented St. John's in a positive way", Cragg said.

In four seasons with the Red Storm, Mullin had a disappointing 59-73 record while qualifying for the NCAA Tournament just once.

Cragg is a Washington native who attended Washington but spent the last three decades in several roles at Duke (hence the Hurley connection).

"The past four years at St. John's University have been one of the most thrilling and challenging points of my career", Mullin said in the statement. "I am extremely grateful to the administration, which has supported me and our basketball program on every level", said Mullin.

The news of Mullin stepping down took the roster by surprise.

The St. John's Red Storm will be looking for a new head coach after the majority of the coaching carousel has been resolved for this offseason. In that time, ASU has back-to-back 20 win seasons and NCAA Tournament berths, something that hasn't happened since the 1980-81 season under Ned Wulk. Junior guard Justin Simon (10.4 points per game) hired an agent and announced he was entering the National Basketball Association draft, while backup guard Bryan Trimble Jr. has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, a source told ESPN.

St. John's went 21-13 this season but last week lost its top recruiter, Matt Abdelmassih, who joined new Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg. He led the Sun Devils to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, but bowed out in the First Four in each.

Other active head coaches or assistant coaches with overlapping Duke tenures whom Cragg could target: Steve Wojciechowski, Johnny Dawkins, Jon Scheyer, Chris Collins, Tommy Amaker and Jeff Capel. The school also reportedly may consider Iona coach Tim Cluess.

JUCO point guard Cam Mack announces he has received his release from St. John's.
