Here's a tip - Phil takes Masterful dig at Kuchar

He's in contention at the Masters, but still sits three strokes behind the leading quintet of Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Francesco Molinari, Jason Day, and Brooks Koepka.

But their feats were all eclipsed by Woods, who signaled he would be a threat to capture his first major title since the 2008 US Open and first Masters title since 2005 - astonishing after years of knee and back injuries that made him doubt if he would ever play competitively again.

"I let myself, my family, my partners and those close to me down, but I also let David down", Kuchar said. "But we're going to have a great day today".

"Three [majors] in a row, I've been right in the mix", Woods added, building on his second place at last year's PGA Championships. "All of a sudden I'm here at the Masters".

Woods is tied at 6-under for the tournament with Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Justin Harding, who is the only Masters newcomer in the group.

As rain fell at Augusta National on the closing stages of day two, Woods played his second shot at the 14th from the pine straw to the left of the fairway.

What followed was vintage Woods and brought back chilling roars harkening to his 1997 "Tigermania" first major win.

Woods had just recorded the first birdie of the day on the daunting 11th hole and fired a superb tee shot to five feet on the 12th when the siren sounded to suspend play due to the threat of lightning at Augusta National.

After an ordinary outward nine featuring three birdies offset by a pair of bogeys, Woods embarked on one of his trademark charges, carding three birdies after the turn to shoot up the leaderboard.

But after producing a miracle recovery shot to find the green, Woods was almost taken out in sensational fashion by a security guard who slid in, after slipping on the mud caused by earlier rain while rushing to protect the superstar.

"It is what it is", Woods said. "Accidents happen and move on". But he made it up for them with a couple of long birdie putts, and he had no complaints with his position.

Woods entered the round four shots off the pace and took some time before building any momentum.
