Trump agrees with Putin on Mueller report

"Had a long and very good conversation with President Putin of Russia", Trump said in a post on Twitter, noting they had discussed trade, Venezuela, Ukraine, North Korea, nuclear arms and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential campaign.

Trump said Friday that he believed Putin "is not looking at all to get involved in Venezuela" after his hour-long phone call with the Russian president - contradicting Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's conclusion.

President Donald Trump talks to reporters while hosting Slovak Republic Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini in the Oval Office at the White House May 03, 2019, in Washington, D.C. George Conway said Russians "probably caught on" to Trump's "imbecility".

President Trump boasted about his "very good call" with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin - and slammed his media critics - in a Saturday tweet. Really, we didn't discuss it, he said, adding they went into great detail on issues such as Venezuela, North Korea and nuclear arms control.

Attorney General William Barr later concluded that there was not sufficient evidence for obstruction of justice, but House Democrats are continuing to pursue that issue.

Sanders said Trump and Putin spoke for a little over an hour and had a good discussion. In March, Bolton warned nations "external to the Western hemisphere" to stay out of Venezuela after Russian Federation landed at least two planeloads of troops in Caracas.

"There was a discussion about extending current nuclear agreements as well as discussions about possibly starting a new one that could include China as well", Sanders said.

Putin seemed amused, said Trump.

The public dissonance between Trump and his national security team came amid high level concerns in the military over a push by Bolton and his National Security Council aides for more aggressive US intervention as the crisis has dragged on for months. Lavrov answered in kind, calling on the United States not to interfere and proposing political negotiations to resolve the Venezuelan crisis.

Trump said the two leaders were also considering a new nuclear agreement "where we make less and they make less".

"The president's primary focus throughout the call was about helping the people of Venezuela".

The two leaders discussed Ukraine. Putin has denied that the Russian government interfered in the 2016 US presidential campaign.

Trump first offered a statement about nuclear weapons reductions alongside Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on April 5, before continued discussions on trade between the USA and China.

Trump cancelled a summit meeting with Putin late previous year after Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian Navy ships on November 25 and arrested 24 sailors.

Trump has called the New START treaty concluded by his predecessor, Barack Obama, a "bad deal" and "one-sided".

The White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, later said Trump didn't tell Putin not to meddle in the 2020 election because he's made that clear in the past. Sanders said Trump said several times that it was important for Russian Federation to continue to help put pressure on North Korea to denuclearize.

Kremlin said Putin informed Trump of the main results of his meeting with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un last week.
