Arsenal's Mesut Özil gets married, with Turkish president as best man

Former German worldwide football Mesut Ozil was married in Istanbul on Friday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as his best man.

Mesut Ozil, Arsenal superstar has finally tied the know with his fiancee Amine Gulse at an Istanbul ceremony in Turkey today, June 7, 2019.

Last year, Ozil retired from German global football at the age of 29, citing 'disrespect, insults and pressure.' He and teammate Ilkay Gundogan were widely criticised by German media and right-wing groups for posing in a photograph alongside Erdogan.

The footballer whipped up a political storm when he was pictured alongside Erdogan in May 2018.

Ozil and German teammate Ilkay Gündoğan were heavily criticized for posing with the President before the 2018 World Cup.

This reaction played a part in Ozil's decision to quit global football, citing the "racism and disrespect" he'd experienced over the photos in his home country. He totaled 92 caps for Germany before that decision.

"I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose", Ozil said, adding that despite his successful history with the team, the way he was treated made him "no longer want to wear the German national team shirt".

Critics accuse Erdogan of autocratic tendencies, corruption and extravagance.

Erdogan is in his fifth year in office and has been credited with improving Turkey's economy, but his opponents cite his autocratic tendencies and a negative human rights record among his deficiencies.

Ozil's management was not immediately available for comment on Erdogan's attendance at his wedding.

Ozil and Gulse, who was crowned Miss Turkey in 2014, also made a hefty donation to the Turkish Red Crescent to provide a meal to some 15,000 Syrian refugees. "However I invite everyone who is willing and able to help to support a very special project close to both of our hearts that we will undertake with BigShoe, ".

'Amine and I will bear the expenses for surgeries of 1000 children in need.
