6 suspects arrested in David Ortiz shooting

The gunman who shot former Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz was hired to do so, according to Dominican Republic Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista.

Justina Garcia, the mother of Feliz who remained in custody, told reporters the charges against her son were a "lie".

The Dominican Republic's Chief Prosecutor Jean Alain Rodriguez spoke at a news conference and revealed it was an $8,000 bounty placed on Ortiz's head. "Certainly that will continue". Ortiz, a future Hall of Famer, was shot in the back at a lounge in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, on Sunday night.

Doctors in Santo Domingo removed Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestines during emergency surgery, and he was flown to Boston for further treatment Monday night, undergoing two hours of exploratory surgery.

David Ortiz's wife on Thursday praised the "quick thinking" of a friend who rushed the former Red Sox star to the hospital in a Rolls-Royce after he was shot in a botched hit job at a Dominican Republic bar. Tiffany said in a statement he was "stable, awake, and resting comfortably" and had taken his first steps since the shooting. Tiffany said he "continues to heal and make progress" as he rests in guarded condition at the ICU.

The police are continuing the investigation and looking for a motive for the shooting.

The high-profile attack on Ortiz drew attention to a string of deaths of US citizens in the Dominican Republic in recent months, as well as violent assaults. He was named an All-Star 10 times and helped the Red Sox win World Series championships in 2004, 2007 and 2013. Police said Cruz confessed to shooting Ortiz.

Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, the alleged getaway driver in the shooting of ex-Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, is escorted to court in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Four other men, including Joel Rodriguez Cruz, Oliver Moises Mirabal Acosta, Reynaldo Rodriguez Valenzuela and Polfirio Allende Deschamps Vazquez, were also arrested. In a court appearance Tuesday night, he was charged as an accomplice to an attempted murder.

Police said six other men allegedly involved in the attack stalked Ortiz in a coordinated effort to kill him and collect a almost $8,000 bounty placed on the retired Major League Baseball player's head.
