One of these victims was transported as a trauma alert with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Plantation Fire Rescue confirmed on Twitter that there are multiple patients.

Police have asked people to avoid the area while they continue to investigate.

Another resident tweeted: "I live a mile at most from today's gas explosion in Plantation".

Some onlookers meandered throughout the plaza as firefighters and police picked through debris.

Evan Hoffman, 47, told the paper he was working in the LA Fitness with his wife when the blast happened.

He said: 'A huge, huge bang, thump, almost, explosion.

"It started shaking back and forth and the roof tiles started crashing down and the power went out".

People were evacuating the building spontaneously, some screaming as fire alarms sounded.

"We're very much relieved that, considering the debris field and considering how we found the patients and where we found them, the injuries are not as severe as we would have thought they would be", said Gordon. "There's a lot of damage, a lot of damage". Otherwise, they said, at least 40 people, including around 30 children, would have been inside the center at the time of the blast.

Plantation police kept the scene of the explosion closed off Sunday morning, and there were a few cars left in the caution-tape-ringed parking lot. Carver said two of his co-workers' cars were destroyed.

"It's insane", Yacob said.
