Telstra outage: EFTPOS machines and ATMs down across the country

The country's biggest telecom provider, Telstra Corp Ltd, said it was investigating the issue and that a number of large customers were affected nationwide.

Supermarket chain Woolworths said its stores were still trading as they are able to process payments manually, however, when ZDNet walked into its Town Hall store in Sydney, a sign greeted shoppers stating it was trading as cash only.

The outage is also having a significant impact on the major banks, with Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Westpac and ANZ all reporting problems.

Whilst the CommBank app and NetBank are still working, CBA ATMs and CBA EFTPOS terminals have well and truly carked it.

The ANZ has now also confirmed it's affected.

Most customer services have now been restored, and we're working with our customers on the remaining few.

According to the ABC, the issue relates to a payment processing network operated by Telstra, which has impacted all banks in some way.

Affected customers have been urged not to contact ComBank's call centre due to the high amount of calls they are receiving.

Update: CommBank has issued another tweet that seems to point the finger pretty squarely at Telstra.

"We are aware of an issue affecting some of our services", CBA said on Twitter.

Police Bank indicated it was experiencing problems with phones systems, ATMS, EFTPOS, its mobile app, Internet banking and services on the New Payments Platform. We are continuing to monitor all services as this happens. If you or your business are experiencing issues, tell us about it in the comments.

Westpac tweeted on Thursday night that the majority of branches, ATMs and services impacted were "back up and running", before thanking customers for their patience.

"Our teams are communicating with external providers on when services will be restored & we'll keep you updated".

"We're sorry for any issues caused and will provide an update when we know more". Online banking is working normally.
