Mass shooting scare creates panic among tourists at Times Square

New York City street in Times Square.

Times Square is one of the most heavily protected areas in the country. Witnesses say that people were jumping out of their shoes and running for cover after hearing the popping noises they believed were gunshots.

The alarm took place at approximately 10pm local time Tuesday night in one of the city's busiest intersections, just days after the U.S. witnessed three mass shootings in a week.

The Times Square incident was not the only false alarm on Tuesday. Just saw Come From Away, and were in Times Square when just after 10pm a wave of people rushed towards us in panic after someone screamed "shooter". However, it is now unknown how many people were hurt.

The confusion brought Tuesday night's Broadway performance of To Kill a Mockingbird at the Shubert Theater to an early end, as people both inside and outside the theater were caught up in the incident.

Audience member Peter Walsh fled through the emergency exit and "ran until no one was running".

"At the Disney Store in Times Square when a backfiring motorcycle was mistaken for gunfire". The stampede made its way into the theater, scaring patrons under their seats and disrupting the production as the cast fled the stage. This is the world we live in.

Other footage posted to Twitter showed the aftermath of the panic with overturned chairs strewn on the sidewalk and a discarded shoe.

Since the beginning of the year, there were around 250 mass shootings in the USA and 273 people have been killed, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

A few hours later, Dayton Ohio became the center of attention as 24-year-old Connor Betts shot 16 people, killing 9.

But in the wake of last weekend's mass shootings in, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, chaos ensued as people raced to escape what they thought could be an active shooter carrying out another attack.
