Health Surveillance Epidemiologist Evan Bischoff says it's hard to predict how severe the mosquito-borne illness will be from summer to summer.

The entirety of Kansas is at high risk for the West Nile virus, according to the latest report by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Officials say people with West Nile fever typically recover on their own, although symptoms may last for weeks to months.

In rare cases, the virus can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord). "People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and people who have received organ transplants, are also at greater risk".

Tarte recommends people prevent mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves, pants, insect repellant and limiting outside activity during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

KCHD says residents should stay indoors during spraying and keep pets inside or in the backyard.

Use air conditioning when possible.

Common sources of standing water include pools and rain barrels, Schaaf said.

Looks like the West Nile Virus is still a thing in Toronto after a case was confirmed in a news release by the City of Toronto on Tuesday.
