PM Modi in Bengaluru on Friday to witness Chandrayaan-2 landing

India will be carving a place for itself among the world's space faring nations with ISRO's Chandrayaan 2 landing, as it attempts to become the fourth country to land on the moon after the former Soviet Union, US and China. The Lander has now also performed two de-orbiting maneuvers using onboard propulsion system and is now just a step away before soft landing on the Moon's surface.

The Lander is now in an orbit that would be about 35 km from the lunar surface at its nearest point (perigee) from where it will begin its final descent on to the Moon, it said, adding the orbit was 101 km from the lunar surface at the farthest (apogee).

"Vikram" (with rover "Pragyaan" housed inside) is expected to touch down on the surface of the moon on September seven, between 1.30 am and 2.30 am.

The PM will be witnessing Chandrayaan-2 landing from Satellite Control Centre (SCC), ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC).

A couple of hours after "Vikram's" touchdown, "Pragyan", the six-wheeled robotic rover, will roll out of the lander and probe the lunar soil for new chemicals, minerals, water, and study the phenomenon of seismic activity for one lunar day (14 days on terra firma). ISRO notified that both the Orbiter and Lander are healthy. The main orbiter will continue its mission for a year. "It's going to be a remarkable event and we are all looking forward to that event".

For this, around 70 students from across the country will be watching the historic Chandrayaan 2's scheduled soft-landing on the moon as it happens in the early hours of Saturday.

To increase awareness about the space program, an online quiz competition was conducted by ISRO in coordination with MyGov.in from August 10 to 25. The official Twitter handle of ISRO will also give updates on the Chandrayaan-2.
