Kieron Pollard to lead West Indies in ODIs and T20Is

In T20Is, Pollard takes over the leadership role from Carlos Brathwaite.

Pollard, 32, has not played an ODI since 2016 but has featured in Twenty20 internationals, most recently against India last month, and is a regular in worldwide T20 competitions such as the Indian Premier League, the Vitality Blast and Australia's Big Bash.

Skerritt also noted that the West Indies cricketers - some of the most sought-after commodity in franchise cricket around the globe - will not have to sacrifice on cash-rich Indian and Caribbean Premier Leagues. He was one of the players on the standby list for World Cup 2019 but did not make the cut.

"Pollard would have been a better choice". The CWI said the move was aimed at improving West Indies' position on the rankings table in limited-overs cricket. In ODIs, he finished with 2,968 runs at 25.36, while claiming 199 wickets at an economy rate of 5.41.

As far as Pollard's national appointment is concerned, it means that ODI skipper Jason Holder and T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite are set to face the axe. Hence, this decision from the West Indies Cricket Board was quite shocking and surprising. Skerritt reasoned that the board was following the "best possible practices for best possible outcomes".

"What impressed me the most about Pollard was his keenness and commitment to give back to the game". "The playing XIs will then be selected by the executive selector, head coach and captain". The West Indies' performances at next two T20 World Cups - in 2020 and 2021 - will have a major say in Pollard's captaincy going into 2023 World Cup.

For now, it has also been confirmed that Holder will continue to lead West Indies in red-ball cricket. Pollard is the right man at the right time to take our white-ball teams forward.

Pollard last played an ODI in October 2016 but he has been a part of the T20I side recently. Pollard has started well with three consecutive wins.

The West Indies have had a rough outing in the last three months or so. Under him, West Indies played 86 ODIs, out of which they won 24 matches.
