Former NFL player Terrell Roberts fatally shot in NorCal

Former NFL defensive back Terrell Roberts was shot and killed at his grandmother's home in Northern California on Wednesday night, according to multiple reports.

Roberts was at his grandmother's home in Richmond that afternoon when someone entered the house and shot him in the backyard, CNN affiliate KPIX reported in a statement attributed to Roberts' family.

Police found Roberts dead in the backyard with a gunshot wound to his chest.

The Roberts family told a San Francisco television station that Roberts had not been "mixed up in anything bad".

As of Thursday, no arrests have been made, but police are searching for a black male between 20 and 35 who weighs roughly 250 pounds.

Roberts, 38, played at Oregon State from 1999-2002 and was a teammate of current Beavers football coach Jonathan Smith. The Bay Area native and Oregon State product tallied one career interception and 29 tackles in 23 appearances.

By later Thursday morning, former teammates were paying tribute to Roberts.

'Man am exhausted of waking up everyday to bad news, ' retired defensive tackle Shaun Smith tweeted.
