Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is not much older (78) and Elizabeth Warren is just a few years younger (70). Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former tech executive Andrew Yang, former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke, and former Obama administration housing secretary Julian Castro appear on stage before the start of the Democratic Presidential Debate at Texas Southern University's Health and PE Center in Houston, Texas on September 12, 2019. And Biden's comments about racial inequality in schools prompted a rebuke from rival U.S. Senator Cory Booker.

He also landed one of the night's toughest critiques of Biden, though he did it in a CNN interview after the debate rather than onstage: "There's a lot of people concerned about Joe Biden's ability to carry the ball all the way across the end line without fumbling", he said.

He said Castro had gotten his facts wrong.

In launching his offensive over Medicare For All against Warren and Sanders, Biden came prepared with a zinger for each of them.

No difficulty has defined the early months of the nomination fight more than health care, which has emerged as a rare proxy within the broader fight for the celebration's soul within the age of Trump.

Not like prior debates, wherever Biden struggled for words and seemed astonished by criticism from fellow Democrats, he mostly sent crisp, intense responses.

Several major events are on the campaign schedule in coming weeks. Political analysts have been predicting that at some point Warren and Sanders, ideological soulmates, will have to begin drawing distinctions between each other.

The next weekend, 18 candidates will attend the Polk County, Iowa, steak fry, a regular stop for presidential contenders, and at least 10 candidates will participate in a forum on LGBTQ issues.

The sprawling Democratic primary field has been headed toward a three-person race, and despite strenuous efforts by the trailing candidates, Thursday's debate seems unlikely to have significantly changed that. None of the 10 candidates on the stage on Thursday is likely to drop out any time soon: They all have qualified for the October debate.

The overall dynamic of this debate was one of Biden going after his most immediate threats (Warren and Sanders), with those further down the popularity ladder taking shots at him.

Biden retorted that people would not have to buy in, to which Castro responded: "You just said that two minutes ago".

It was apparently a pointed attack, given that Biden has had a string of misremembered stories and gaffes on the campaign trail. "This was about a disagreement over what the vice president said regarding health care policy". Biden was Obama's vice president for eight years. Biden and Warren got the most speaking time.

Booker said on CNN after the debate that Biden is sometimes "meandering in his speech".

"Make sure you have the record player on at night", Biden said while talking about tips for raising children.

Biden poses for selfies while visiting with students at Texas Southern University Student Life Center in Houston on Friday. "Why don't you?" Buttigieg said.

"Biden's strength is based on this very immeasurable metric of electability, but no one is that excited about him", Sanchez said. "I have done it my whole life". I, who wrote the damn bill, if I may say so, intend to eliminate all out-of-pocket expenses, all deductibles, all co-payments.

Kall said Castro mischaracterized Biden's statement, which probably backfired against him.

But Biden has faced the most persistent whispers about his age, particularly when he misspeaks when campaigning - a circumstance his aides note has been a well-known part of his decadeslong political career.

Sanders and a supporter of President Donald Trump - who said he recently lost his insurance and job - initially shouted over each other when Sanders asked for input from the audience. Those exchanges had dismayed some Democrats, who urged the candidates to focus on laying out their own positive agendas.

During a discussion about curbing gun violence, Klobuchar called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to take up House-passed gun control bills and also act on her legislation to prevent convicted stalkers and people who have abused their partners from buying guns. "That is not how we're going to win this".
