Depleted Sri Lanka shock Pakistan despite Hasnain hat-trick

Pakistan's latest speed sensation Mohammad Hasnain became the youngest bowler to pocket a hat-trick in T20 Internationals on Saturday.

Mohammad Hasnain achieves the feat against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The 19-year-old pacer achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. All the credit needs to go to the openers and debutant Banuka (Rajapaksa).

Nuwan Pradeep removed Babar Azam in the second over and Umar Akmal's return to the global arena lasted for just one ball as he registered a golden duck. They put on an opening stand of 84 runs before Gunathilaka was dismissed for a well compiled 57 runs.

Pakistan needed a big innings from Azam who promised much with two boundaries but was caught behind off Pradeep.

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Iftikhar Ahmed helped to rebuild, adding 46 for the fourth wicket, but the rate started to spiral, and by the time the next breakthrough came - Iftikhar run out after a mix-up - it had crossed 11 runs per over. Udana and Pradeep finished with three wickets each, while Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 2/20 in four over.

"Sri Lanka played better than us and that's why we were wary of them", admitted Sarfaraz.

The win is significant for an inexperienced Sri Lanka team - ranked eighth in Twenty20s - who are missing ten top players, including regular skipper Lasith Malinga, who all refused to tour over security fears. Thereafter, two wickets fell in two balls with the total on 153 runs.

Playing just his second T20I, the Pakistani tearaway showed just why he's held in such high regard, taking three wickets in three balls across two spells.

Hasnain is the second youngest bowler to register a hat-trick in men's worldwide cricket (Tests, ODIs, T20Is). Interestingly, Ashraf also picked up his hat-trick against the same opponents in 2017. The last two matches will played at the Gaddafi stadium on Monday and Wednesday.
