Why is Turkey invading northeast Syria?

Turkey has long threatened an assault on Kurdish fighters in Syria whom Ankara considers terrorists - but expectations for an attack rose after President Trump abruptly announced Sunday that U.S. troops would be pulled from the area.

Turkey's campaign - in which a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member is raining down bombs on an area where hundreds of US troops are stationed - drew immediate criticism and calls for restraint from Europe.

Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces urged the worldwide community and the USA -led coalition to help prevent what they said was an imminent humanitarian disaster as numerous targeted areas are highly populated.

Officials said they were uncertain whether Turkish forces would conduct a symbolic feint inside the border - which they said could enable the USA troops to return to reactivate the safe zone - or would force their way deeper into Syria.

"We never expected the U.S. to take them back on to USA soil, and we definitely did not want them taken to Guantanamo", a European official said, expressing surprise at the president's remarks, as the Europeans and the United States had been in constant and continuing discussions about the fate of the Isis captives.

"Reports in some media outlets stating that the operation has begun do not reflect the reality".

A Turkish security source told Reuters the military operation into Syria has been launched with air strikes and will be supported by artillery and howitzer fire.

"Turkey will teach a lesson to terror organizations that threatens our southern border and we will give an opportunity for Syrian refugees who are now in Turkey", Oktay said. "I call on Turkey as well as on the other actors to act with restraint and to stop operations already as we are speaking", Juncker said.

The unprecedented nature of Turkey's attack on Wednesday, bombing peaceful towns along the border with impunity, represents not only a setback for 30 years of United States policies in the Middle East and around the world, but also a change in the concept of global law and the change in the way Western powers deal with partners that used to fight ISIS.

Trump Rejects Criticism on Syria, Invites Erdogan to White House video player. "We expect Turkey to abide by all of its commitments, and we continue to monitor the situation closely".

But the Kurds say Ankara's real goal is to dilute their demographic dominance of the northeast with an influx of mostly Sunni Arab refugees from other parts of the country now living in southwestern Turkey.

Erdogan said he spoke with Putin, who has been very "constructive" as the Turkish military prepared for its advance.

From the Turkish town of Akcakale on the Syrian border, across from the flashpoint Syrian town of Tal Abyad, the Associated Press reported that the Turkish airstrikes were hitting Ras al-Ayn.

The SDF, which has vowed to defend itself against any perceived Turkish incursion, called on the US-led coalition and the global community to implement a no-fly zone over northern Syria similar to the one implemented in Iraq.

"This attack will spill the blood of thousands of innocent civilians because our border areas are overcrowded", the group said in a statement.

"It was shocking to see Mr. Trump seemingly abandon the Kurds without recalling the sacrifice they made to rid Syria of Islamic State militants, known in Arabic as Daesh, particularly as Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan permitted foreign jihadists to cross into Syria in the first place", al Sharif added. Patrolling with Turkey and global forces to protect the Kurds and Turkey is the way to go.

The Defense Department had also posted photos of SDF fighters withdrawing from the area and dismantling fortifications. "We are prepared to defend the people and the people of NE #Syria", the SDF said.

The Syrian Kurdish force has pledged to fight back, raising the potential for an eruption of new warfare in Syria.

"We will protect the territorial integrity of Syria and free the people of the region from the clutches of terror". I hope that Turkey, when they go into Syria, they won't slaughter the Kurds.
