"During Sunday night's Dallas Cowboys game, we made a mistake by not immediately interrupting the football game with a Tornado Warning", read a statement from NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth/KXAS on Monday.

Devastating aerial footage has since emerged showing the destruction caused by the storm.

Although no serious injuries are as yet reported, the Washington Post quoted the Dallas Office of Emergency Management as saying three people had been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening conditions while another six were hurt when a lorry overturned.

Tens of thousands of people were without electricity following the storm. Johnson also said the city is fortunate its only seen property damage and no fatalities in light of the storm. According to The AP Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee will be hit with thunderstorms.

As of 2 am local time Monday morning, over 95,000 homes are without power in the Dallas area, according to electric company Oncor. At a city press conference, Oncor spokesperson Kerri Dunn said they did not yet have a timeline on when power would be restored to all areas, but were assessing the damage and would provide an update as soon as possible. About 65,000 of those customers were within Dallas, according to the city, which opened the Bachman Recreation Center early Monday morning for people seeking shelter.

Residences nearby were also affected, including Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin's North Dallas home, which was destroyed.

Dallas Fire-Rescue Spokesman Jason Evans said search teams conducted primary assessments on accessible structures for six hours overnight, but those efforts were "hampered by limited access and lack of proper lighting". He said the department had received approximately 50 calls for downed utility wires and over 40 for gas leaks. Fire-Rescue's own Station 41 was left "uninhabitable" when high winds stripped the roof and other parts, but no firefighters were injured.

In one Dallas neighborhood, Dustin and Lauren Collins said they felt lucky as they cleared debris from the yard of their largely intact home. He wrote it's 'an extremely sad sight to see'. Presenter Lew Morris said the power went out first, followed by the "distinctive whistle" of a tornado within three minutes. "We waited until all the noise died down", Mr Morris said.

A tornado touched down Sunday night near Dallas Love Field before moving northeast through the city.

Large hail was also experienced, which is expected to exacerbate the final tally of losses due to automobile damage in the Dallas region.

Citing extensive damage to campuses, the Dallas Independent School District canceled Monday classes at several schools. Trees, power lines, and buildings could be unstable and cause damage, leading to injuries.
