Best Buy joins Amazon, Walmart in offering next day delivery

We are fast approaching the time of year when retailers mark down everything under the sun, and to further entice shoppers, Best Buy is offering free next-day shipping to nearly everyone in the U.S. (around 99 percent of Best Buy customers, the retail chain says). For example, major appliances and televisions 51 inches or larger may have different delivery terms.

For shoppers who live outside of those areas, or who have picked a non-qualifying product, Best Buy is still offering free standard delivery, no minimum spend required.

The new delivery service covers items like tablets, headphones and espresso machines, but not heavier things like big-screen TVs and refrigerators.

The move by Best Buy will only increase pressure on other rivals that are already investing in millions of dollars to shorten the delivery window. With its Amazon Prime program, you can get free next-day shipping on plenty of products. Walmart has also been experimenting with free, next day delivery. And the company offers same-day pickup in stores around the year.

Earlier this week, in what also appears to be a move to compete with Amazon, UPS announced that it's launching a fulfillment service for online retailers. "You simply select how fast it needs to get to your customer - we do the rest", UPS said.
