That could be a wise political move for Democrats, said Ross Garber, who teaches impeachment law at Tulane Law School and has represented four governors in impeachment proceedings. They said communications teams from the White House and Congress co-ordinate three times a week with phone calls.

But some legal experts said giving Trump basic protections and allowing his lawyers to participate would make the impeachment investigation appear more fair.

According to House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, Democrats don't want to "jeopardise investigative equities".

It happened a day after William B. Taylor Jr., the acting US ambassador to Ukraine, testified for hours Tuesday that the Trump administration's dealings with the Ukraine over promised aid for the embattled young country were "undermined by an irregular, informal channel of USA policy-making".

Out of the 53 Republican senators only 53 said they would oppose outright impeachment of the President. The interviews are being held in what is called a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, which is a totally secure room where members can hear classified information.

Swalwell accused the Republicans of trying to intimidate witnesses after "damaging" testimony Tuesday by Bill Taylor, the acting USA ambassador to Ukraine, who has expressed strong misgivings about Trump's July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

It is a violation of U.S. House rules to access SCIFs - secure facilities created to prevent electronic eavesdropping - without permission, and concerns were raised that lawmakers were committing serious security breaches by striding in with their mobile phones.

The whistleblower's August 12 complaint about President Trump's July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky kicked off a series of events that led Democrats to open the impeachment inquiry in September. According to a report in the Washington Post, Trump has finally swung to the opposite end of the spectrum, seeking counsel from sources hoping to undermine USA foreign interests.

Taylor confirms, as has always been denied but has been obvious, that Trump's pressure on Ukraine tied in directly to his ask for an investigation into Joe Biden, a potential 2020 opponent. Cooper's testimony has been delayed indeterminately because a number of Republican lawmakers are still in that secure area, where they are not authorized to be.

The lawmakers assailed the closed-door format of the hearings. "The press ought to be allowed in that room", he added.

His attack on members of his own party was triggered by the growing number of Republicans who support the impeachment and want him removed from office.

Meanwhile, a poll by Quinnipiac University published on Wednesday sees that a 55% majority of registered voters-a 4% increased from last week's poll-said they approved of the impeachment inquiry, while 43% said they disapproved.

"Because of the SUPPORT Act, we are able to look at ways to reduce opioid use during pregnancy and recognize early childhood issues related to substance abuse", she said.

"The American people have a voice in this process".

John Kennedy (R-La.) spoke with Fox News on October 19 and expressed his opinion on the impeachment proceedings, "When I watch the House impeachment proceedings, I'm both perplexed and appalled", he said.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Tucson, said in a statement that the GOP action is a "historical embarrassment" when those lawmakers are "silent on the president's crimes".

"It's a bunch of Freedom Caucus members having pizza around a conference table pretending to be fearless", Malinowski said.
