Rep. Katie Hill Announces Resignation Amid Allegations of Inappropriate Relationships With Staffers

The congresswoman, who is involved in a divorce, announced her resignation on Sunday and followed up with the video statement in which she condemned "my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives".

In a statement to constituents released on Wednesday, Hill admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a campaign staffer before entering Congress, for which she apologized.

Hill's estranged husband Kenny Heslep alleged they were romantically involved in a social media post shared last summer when he filed for divorce in LA Superior Court.

While Hill issued a relatively ambiguous statement confirming a relationship with a staffer the day after denying an affair with a male member of her congressional staff, she directly blamed her departure on a "coordinated campaign carried out by the right-wing media and Republican opponents", accusing both of "enabling and perpetuating my husband's abuse by providing him a platform" and calling it "disgusting and unforgivable".

Hill denied any relationship without congressional staffer, but did not address the allegations of a relationship with a campaign staffer. The article included text messages it said were between Hill and the woman as well as intimate photos of them together.

One image shows Hill nude holding a bong and sporting an Iron Cross tattoo on her bikini area.

"For the mistakes made along the way and the people who have been hurt, I am sorry, and I am learning I am not a flawless person and never pretended to be".

Last year, Hill won a Republican-held seat near Los Angeles.

About 90 minutes after tweeting the resignation, Hill tweeted on her campaign account, "To every girl and woman - to everyone who believes in this fight - this isn't over".

Hill ran as a first-time candidate with no political experience.

"Congresswoman Katie Hill came to Congress with a powerful commitment to her community and a bright vision for the future, and has made a great contribution as a leader of the Freshman Class", Pelosi said.

While Hill ultimately appears to have been abandoned by her Democratic backers - eager to return the focus on Trump - one Republican congressman had her back.

The scandal that enveloped freshman USA congresswoman Katie Hill of California this month probably wasn't going to put the brakes on the impeachment of US president Donald Trump - but it was sure as hell giving the country an interesting distraction. On Sunday, after apologizing for the relationship with a subordinate, Hill announced she was stepping aside.

She goes on to say, "Having private photos of personal moments weaponized against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy". "So, I have to take my personal fight outside of Congress". However, in a letter sent to constituents on Wednesday and obtained by Fox News, Hill acknowledged that in the final years of what she called an "abusive marriage", she began a relationship with the unnamed campaign staffer.

Hill's spokeswoman said that the resignation is not immediate and that Hill is still deciding on when she will leave office.

Hill was elected last November to represent the 25th Congressional District, which includes Santa Clarita Valley, and portions of the northern San Fernando Valley, Antelope Valley and eastern Ventura County.
