"Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden", Father Morey told the newspaper in a statement.

Father Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church confirmed Monday afternoon that he had denied the presidential candidate Holy Communion because of his stance on abortion. The priest explained via email, "Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church".

Biden, who claims to be personally against abortion, has gone on record in support of upholding the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, and recently has voiced his support of Medicaid funded abortions. The campaign told the Florence Morning News that "if he did attend, he did so in a private capacity".

A Biden spokesperson refused to confirm or deny whether the lifelong Catholic attended Saint Anthony on Sunday, but the Associated Press reported that the candidate was campaigning in sc over the weekend.

Canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law states: "Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion".

Denying pro-choice politicians the sacraments has always been practiced, most notably in 2013 when the Vatican declared that Nancy Pelosi should be denied communion until her policy changed.

This is a local news story that was pointed out to me by a friend: "Joe Biden denied Holy Communion at Florence church".

"I think it's fair to say if action isn't taken soon, you're going to find that a person who was 7 or 14 points behind Biden will be breathing down his neck or actually ahead of him", said Kurt Meyer, chairman of the Mitchell County Democratic Party.

"I've been working through the finer details of my health care plan like others in this race, and I've been struggling with the problems that Hyde now presents", Biden said during a Democratic National Committee gala in Atlanta in June.

Morey said it's his responsibility as a priest to share hard truths with people who come into his church before adding, "I will keep Mr. Biden in my prayers".

At a Planned Parenthood event this summer, Biden promised to "eliminate all of the changes that this president made" to family-planning programs, according to Politico, and said he would increase funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider.
