Shadowlands is your next World of Warcraft expansion

In classic World of Warcraft expansion "Wrath of the Lich King", Alliance soldier Bolvar Fordragon replaced Arthas Menethil as the avatar of the Lich King, ruler of the undead Scourge on Azeroth.

There's not much detail to be gleaned about the zones themselves from the announcement, but the footage shown has given us a glimpse at what to expect from the Shadowlands - which a narrator eerily claims are "infinite - their terrors and beauty never meant for mortal eyes".

Today Blizzard Entertainment hosted the opening keynote of its annual BlizzCon celebration, and they announced the next expansion for World of Warcraft.

In this new realm, players will need to choose a Covenant to align with in their quest to restore balance between the forces of life and death.

The cunning Venthyr of Revendreth, who feast on the souls of the prideful and vain in a gothic realm of opulence and torment.

There's a brand new World of Warcraft expansion coming next year - and it's darker than its predecessors.

Shadowlands will also include Torghast, Tower of the Damned, a rogue-like instance with ever-changing rooms and legendary treasure; an updated leveling system that provides meaningful progression at every level; and the ability for all allied races to become the Death Knight class. It looks as though Bolvar is set to play a central role in the next WoW expansion, tentatively dubbed "Shadowlands". Those of us at home can also pre-purchase the expansion over on Blizzard's website. A physical Collector's Edition of the game will be revealed at a later date.
