US online sales on Thanksgiving Day jumped 17% to $4.1 billion, according to Salesforce.

Much has been said about how awful it is that we make retail workers slave away on Thanksgiving night to get ready for the insane rush of Black Friday sales.

Online shopping, in particular, can be unsafe as it's just so easy to click on an item instead of standing in a store and facing the reality of the purchase head on. Check out Amazon's Black Friday & Cyber Monday sale page and Walmart's Black Friday & Cyber Monday home page for thousands more deals on a wide range of products. This year, only 36% of people said they planned to do most of their holiday shopping on Black Friday - down from 51% just three years ago, according to a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers. You can get information from your local newspaper, ads on various apps, online search, social media, and advertisement on physical stores.

To keep foot traffic flowing, retailers at Hudson Yards in NY are offering "doorbuster" deals, said Marie Driscoll, managing director of luxury and fashion at Coresight Research.

Meanwhile, Adobe Analytics expects online sales of $4.4B on Thanksgiving Day, which is an increase of 19.7% from previous year. Over the past 10 years, there's been a little under 1 percent growth per year in online retailing.

"I'm looking for gifts for people and candles for myself", said Richie.

Schultz said consumers who anticipate hitting the stores on turkey day or Black Friday should have a plan and map out where you're going to go. "For the social aspect", said Colleen Valentino, who estimated she's shopped on Black Friday 15 times before.

"If you're heading out into the stores, you might want to know how crowded they're expected to be before you get there", says VandenBerg, the Google trends expert.

Costco's website went down entirely for a brief period of time early on Thanksgiving Day.

At the other end of the divide, specialty apparel retailers Gap Inc, Victoria Secret-owner L Brands Inc and department stores Macy's Inc and Kohl's Corp have slumped as they struggle to lure shoppers to malls and away from online giants like Amazon.com Inc.
