Pep Guardiola says he is satisfied with the state of mind of his Manchester City players even though they twice lost the lead to draw 2-2 with Newcastle and slip further behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Manchester City have not conceded two or more goals in three straight away games since a run of four in April 2011.

The pair - who are now the club's only fit senior specialist central defenders - have not started together since a calamitous loss to Norwich in September.

Asked why Guardiola has not picked Stones and Otamendi together since the 3-2 league defeat against Norwich in September, he replied: "Because I like Fernandinho in that position". Guardiola added, when pressed by a reporter about whether he was happy with the 34-year-old Fernandinho.

Pressed on why he continues to choose a midfielder in defence, Guardiola responded: "I prefer [Ilkay] Gundogan and Rodri in midfield".

After failing to keep a clean sheet in seven games in all competitions, however, Guardiola accepts his team needed to tighten up at the back. Of course, it's not good for us.

Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero (thigh) and left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko (knee) are not yet ready to return.

The Argentine striker will miss Tuesday's clash and also Saturday's visit of neighbours Manchester United, Guardiola confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Monday. The Argentina global sustained a thigh injury in the 2-1 win over Chelsea on 23 November, with Guardiola saying: "He is not ready for the derby but after the derby we will see".

The Argentine missed City's draw with Newcastle due to an injury sustained in City's 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Guardiola is expecting a tough night at Burnley. "They have to believe to win tomorrow", he said. That is the fact. "In the situation that we are in, we can not think too much about the [teams] that are in front".

Stones said: "We need to look at our game and see what we did wrong. [We have to] try to be.the chances that we have and the few we concede, to be more solid in these departments and we will improve". "It is always hard for every team [to play against Burnley]", he added. It's not like last season when we were here when we played not well.
