"We're seeing flu earlier than usual and it's a different type of influenza that we usually see at the beginning", said New Mexico Department of Health state epidemiologist, Dr. Michael Landen. The report notes the department has received reports of 3 additional flu-related deaths in Minnesota this season, raising the total since the start of the season to 6.

For the fifth week in a row the state reported "widespread activity" of the virus, with increases seen across SC.

The number represented a almost fivefold increase from the 14 outbreaks reported by schools in the first week of December, according to the latest influenza tracking by the Minnesota Department of Health.

The flu vaccine should cover the strains that are circulating, Whatcom public health officials said, adding that it wasn't too late for people to get their flu shot.

The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, retail pharmacies and the county's public health centers.

Coughs and sneezes are among the main ways that influenza germs are spread.

All regions of the country are seeing elevated levels of flu-like illness, according to the CDC. If you use a tissue, throw it away promptly instead of reusing it. "These steps include: frequent hand washing, covering your coughs/sneezes with a tissue or into your elbow and staying home if you have flu-like symptoms".

More jobs, more flu: When the economy is on an upswing, public health officials should plan for an above-normal increase in flu, according to a recent Ball State University study.

Nineteen states and Puerto Rico experienced high ILI activity, compared with 11 states and Puerto Rico the week before.

So why do so many people have the flu so early this year, and why is it relatively weak?

"Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later", the agency said.
