"Hong Kong has been taken over by those rioters and we are all affected", said a 73-year-old woman surnamed Cheung.

As this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, each Chinese takes pride in the country's splendid achievements, Xi said, adding that the confidence in the country's development path has been strengthened.

The most important reason for Macau's successful implementation of "one country, two systems" is patriotism, Xi said.

"I must emphasise, since Hong Kong and Macau's return to the motherland, dealing with these two Special Administrative Regions' affairs is entirely China's internal affairs and none of the business of foreign forces", Mr Xi said.

The president arrived in Macao on Wednesday and his agenda included meetings with its leaders, a tour of schools, government offices and economic centers, and a cultural gala to celebrate the date.

In Hong Kong, Xi is facing his biggest political challenge yet after more than six months of pro-democracy protests.

In contrast, Hong Kongers often boo the national anthem at football matches while Chinese flags have become a frequent target for pro-democracy protesters, fueling outrage in Beijing.

Incoming Macau chief executive Ho Iat-seng will be sworn in for a five-year term along with his team of new secretaries in the morning.

But there are stark differences between the two: Hong Kong is a city of 7.5 million people, while Macau's population is less than a tenth of that.

The seizure was made in accordance to the Airport Authority Ordinance, the government body said in an email Tuesday, citing a section of the rules that addresses overdue charges.

That partly echoes comments he made at the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover in 2017, when he warned that Beijing would not tolerate the city being used to undermine Communist rule on the mainland. He said China would be unwavering in the defense of its sovereignty.

"It's totally one country, one system", said a 34-year-old local who regularly travels to Hong Kong, adding that protesting in Macao was "pointless and risky".

The skyline and market have changed beyond recognition using glittering casinos raking at every week that which Las Vegas collects in per month.

Its GDP has soared from US$6.4 billion (RM26.51 billion) in 1999 to more than US$55 billion (RM227.84 billion) while per capita GDP is the third-highest in the world behind Luxembourg and Switzerland according to the International Monetary Fund.
