A woman has been charged with attempted murder after telling police in Iowa that she deliberately drove into a girl because she appeared "Mexican".

Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, was arrested on other charges and Thursday admitted to Clive police she hit the girl with her vehicle on December 9, according to a news release from the Clive Police Department. Franklin ran over the girl, causing her to suffer injuries all over her body, the outlet reported.

Clive Police say Poole Franklin then went to a West Des Moines gas station and started yelling racists comments towards a cashier.

The 42-year-old was already being held in a jail over a separate assault allegedly committed the same day, police said. During the interview Franklin not only admitted to being the driver of the vehicle that struck this girl, but also that she had done so intentionally. "She struck the victim because the victim is Hispanic".

Franklin is being charged not only with attempted murder but assault, theft, consumption, intoxication and possession of illegal substances, according to the Polk County Sherrif's Office.

On December 9, shortly before 5pm, a 14 year old girl was walking on the sidewalk on her way to an activity at Indian Hills Jr.

Ms Franklin made several derogatory statements about Latinos during a police interview in which she admitted she intentionally ran over the teenager, police said.

"I want to say in the strongest terms possible that there is no place in our community ... for this type of hatred or violence", Chief Venema said.

"We're going to present all of that information to the prosecutors and ultimately they will make the determination on what crimes to prosecute", Venema said.
