The general manager will have control of the 53-man roster; the head coach and the general manager will report to ownership.

While only someone within the team would know whether the part of about the game plans was true, the part about the "total mess" has been obvious to anyone with two functioning eyes.

However, in those two full seasons Cleveland was 13-18-1 and didn't finish better than third in the AFC North. Dorsey fired Hue Jackson in the middle of the 2018 season and replaced him with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. "Our process to improve upon the leadership will allow the flexibility to ensure we create the best partnership between our future head coach and general manager".

Before joining the Browns, Dorsey had spent four seasons as the Chiefs' general manager.

Earlier in the day, the Browns postponed a scheduled news conference with Dorsey, with the team saying it was pushing it back until Thursday because of the New Year's holiday and meetings about the coaching search. Last year, Dorsey hired a head coach, who reported to Dorsey.

With Dorsey now out, it's a complete new era for the Browns moving forward.

Other known potential candidates for the Browns' vacancy include former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

"Right now we're just focusing on people with National Football League coaching experience", he said in his press conference Thursday, according to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot.

Dorsey took over as general manager in December 2017 and built what looked to be the framework of a contender, drafting pieces such as Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and Denzel Ward and making numerous big moves in free agency and through trades. Still, he left the Browns better than he found them.
