London's historic Koko venue has been badly damaged by fire.

"We want to thank the London Fire Brigade for its quick response and how well it handled the situation".

"We will provide further comments as circumstances become clearer".

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said crews were working hard to save the rest of the building near Mornington Crescent station. This is bad news particularly as it was going through a refurbishment and we were hoping to hold our next BBC Radio London Soul Night Out there when it opens. No one was reported as being hurt in the fire.

We've got 8 fire engines & around 60 firefighters tackling a visible blaze on #Camden High Street. But it's not looking good, I'm very afraid the roof and interior are gone.

Camden Council leader Georgia Gould described the fire as "heartbreaking" and praised the fire brigade for their "swift and courageous response".

London firefighters said they were called to the scene in Camden, north London, shortly before 9 p.m.

Labour leadership hopeful and local MP Keir Starmer added his voice too, tweeting: "Awful news in Camden tonight". The site was due to reopen in the spring of 2020 after a "state-of-the-art" renovation, after the purchase of two adjacent buildings.

A fire broke out at the renowned Koko in Camden at approximately 9pm this evening (January 6), sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. "Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning".
