Also nominated for best picture are Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age story Little Women, based on Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Sam Mendes' World War I odyssey 1917, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Bong Joon Ho's Palme d'Or-winning film Parasite.

And sometimes the best a film can hope for is to announce that it is an Academy Award nominee.

The Irishman and Marriage Story got top honors, each receiving a nomination for Best Picture, alongside Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The 71-year-old was last nominated 17 years ago for a supporting role in About Schmidt, and was a leading-actress victor in 1991 for Misery.

The best actor contenders are Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes). The second half, which will include nominations for Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Picture, will begin at 8:30 am ET.

Female filmmakers were entirely shut out of the best director race.

Notable snubs included Eddie Murphy for blaxploitation biopic "Dolemite Is My Name", Jennifer Lopez for "Hustlers", Awkwafina for "The Farewell" and Lupita Nyong'o for "Us". The movie has been nominated for best picture, Martin Scorsese has landed an achievement in directing nod, and both Al Pacino and Joe Pesci have received nominations for best performance by an actor in a supporting role.

Renee Zellweger, who has swept the best actress nominations so far during this awards season, headed the best actress Oscar shortlist thanks to her acclaimed turn as showbiz legend Judy Garland in "Judy".

In the documentary category, "American Factory" - which follows a US Rust Belt factory reopened by a Chinese billionaire - picked up a nomination for its well-known producers. "Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!" the former United States president tweeted Monday.

This year's Oscars will take place on February 9, the earliest date ever in the ceremony's 92-year history.
