Valve's Half-Life series is free on Steam for the next two months

Yesterday, it announced that it wants to celebrate the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx by making the other entries in the long-running series free-to-play on Steam. Half-Life: Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and its subsequent Episodes, and Valve is keen to remind us of those and previous events in the series before we play it.

This week, Valve decided to make the entirety of the Half-Life series of games available to play for free through Steam. Numbers have been climbing across the series in the weeks since the announcement of the new game, but Half-Life now has more people playing it than at any time in the last seven and a half years. For example, just before Christmas, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were in the sale at £0.71 each, though they are now listed at £7.19 each... Also, it's a chance to play more Half-Life, and though the series is so enshrined it's nearly more legend than actual game at this point, that will never be a bad thing. Steam users began to receive notifications stating that the Half-Life Collection would be free-to-play for the next 2 months. That said, you'll still have slightly over a month to go through them at the very least.

The Half-Life franchise is one of Valve's biggest contributions to the gaming industry next to Steam.

In case essentially renting the entire Half-Life franchise isn't enough, though, you can buy them in the Half-Life Complete bundle, which is now 40% off.

Set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2, the game sees protagonist Alyx Vance and her father Eli secretly mount a resistance to the occupation of Earth by a mysterious alien race known as The Combine.
