A fifth person has tested positive to the potentially fatal coronavirus in Australia but health officials don't believe there's been any local human-to-human transmission.

Two recent circumstances were reported Sunday - one in Los Angeles County in California and the assorted in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Los Angeles County health officials have confirmed a fourth United States case of a new pneumonia-like virus from China.

In a bid to slow the spread of the respiratory virus, the government had previously locked down hard-hit Hubei, a province in central China that is at the outbreak's epicentre, in an unprecedented operation affecting tens of millions of people.

A working group chaired by Premier Li Keqiang to tackle the outbreak decided on Sunday "to reduce population flows" by extending the Spring Festival holiday which had been scheduled to end on January 30, state news agency Xinhua said.

The Los Angeles County public health department said on Sunday that the infected person presented for treatment after he noticed that he was not well and was now receiving medical treatment.

In the statement from Los Angeles County, health officials said they are "working to identify persons who may have had close personal contact with this individual, including any friends, family members or health care professionals, to monitor them for signs and symptoms of illness and to take measures to prevent spread of the virus".

Another case is a patient being treated near Chicago.

Travel restrictions have been put in place in multiple major cities in China, grounding planes and trains and blocking roads and tunnels. The patient is isolated in hospital and in good condition. It can cause pneumonia, which has been deadly in some cases.

Dozens of people have died from the virus in China, which has imposed massive travel bans in hard-hit parts of the country in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus, and the U.S. consulate in Wuhan announced on Sunday that it would evacuate its staff and certain individuals on board a charter flight. The latest confirmations have caused worldwide alarm, officials said. The CDC is screening passengers on converse and connecting flights from Wuhan at 5 foremost airports in Atlanta, Chicago, Fresh York Metropolis, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Queensland authorities on Monday cleared four patients after testing and are still seeking to contact four people who were on the same flight as the patient who is in hospital in Victoria.
