Dodgers acquire Betts & Price in blockbuster trade with Red Sox

Former MVP Mookie Betts and former Cy Young Award victor David Price are heading to the Dodgers from Boston.

Betts, a 27-year-old right fielder, was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 2018, when he helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series championship.

Throughout the winter, Boston entertained offers for Betts, whose free-agent haul following the 2020 season could exceed $400 million.

But Yankees managing partner Hal Steinbrenner stuck a very diplomatic tone when asked Wednesday about the Betts trade. Price has three years and $96 million remaining on his contract. The pitcher joined the Red Sox in 2015 from the Tampa Bay Rays.

In a separate trade, the Dodgers have agreed to send outfielder Joc Pederson - deemed surplus with Betts aboard - to the neighboring Los Angeles Angels for infielder Luis Rengifo.

Verdugo didn't play after August 4 because of a back injury he re-aggravated while on a rehab assignment in September.

Overall in his Red Sox career, Price went 46-24 with a 3.84 ERA in four seasons. He was rated the No. 83 overall prospect for 2020 by Major League Baseball pipeline.

With the Red Sox clearly in at least a partial rebuilding phase, their World Series odds have taken a substantial hit.
