Rush Limbaugh receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

News broke earlier on Tuesday as CNN reported that Trump made the announcement off the record at a gathering of news anchors to preview tonight's State of the Union address.

President Trump plans to award conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh with the Presidential Medal of Freedom "as soon as next week", Politico reports. Limbaugh was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. "His health condition, however, does not excuse a career of hate-filled racism, homophobia and misogyny, nor remotely justify giving him a high honor in the form of the Presidential Medal of Freedom". Limbaugh, who was seated in a wheelchair, then rose from his seat before First Lady Melania Trump presented him with the medal. "Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your tireless devotion to our country".

Limbaugh was just the third radio personality to ever be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the first since Paul Harvey was bestowed with the award in 2005.

"I wish I didn't have to tell you this and I thought about not telling anybody".

"And to do that, and to give it to Rush Limbaugh when there were plenty of people in that audience that have contributed positively to the fabric of American society - much more, frankly, than he has". And so I think, you know, overall it's a wash.

On Monday, Limbaugh announced he has advanced lung cancer, and a person familiar with the matter said Limbaugh will receive the honor sometime in the next few months.

Limbaugh started his nationally syndicated radio show 30 years ago and is considered one of the most influential conservative pundits in the U.S.
