Essential shutting down after not being able to finish Project GEM

Essential first tried to created a Android smartphone with PH-1.

Having co-founded Android Inc.in 2003 and leading the charge on the mobile operating system for almost a decade after Google bought the company for at least $50 million, Andy Rubin had a great deal of momentum when he left to chart his own course.

"Our vision was to invent a mobile computing paradigm that more seamlessly integrated with people's lifestyle needs", the company said in a statement.

But in its press release today, Essential noted that the startup has "no clear path to deliver [the Gem] to customers".

According to the blog post, though, Project Gem won't see the light of day now that the company is closing up shop for good. "Given this, we have made the hard decision to cease operations and shut down Essential", the company said. We just saw the February Android security update release on 3 February, but Essential stated that will be the final update from the Essential software team.

Finally, in a bit of surprise news in late 2018, Essential announced it had acquired the email app Newton Mail, formerly called CloudMagic.

If you are keen on smartphone tinkering, Essential will be posting a pre-build of its vendor image as well as anything else needed to hack the Essential Phone to GitHub.

It's not clear how much coverage of Andy Rubin's behavior at Google hurt Essential as a company, but it surely did him no favors. The company had big plans to shake up the smartphone market, but a series of roadblocks, which included reports of Rubin's alleged sexual misconduct while at Google, derailed those plans. Some tech publications, such as Android Police, made the decision to refuse all access to Essential devices for testing due to concerns over his behavior. Essential announced today that it will cease operations and shut down the company. If you had your heart set on yelling at your half-width product to perform simple tasks, you may want to consider having children in lieu of buying GEM.
