"I never met the man, but this week my brother and I were going to train".

Still, Downs has yet to actually meet Jeter face to face, though they spoke over FaceTime recently as well.

"When he came into the major leagues [in 1995], he was the name", Downs explained to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon in 2017.

Price signed a seven-year, $217 million contract with the Red Sox before the 2016 season.

"I've idolized him my whole life", Downs said. So he told her that and it was great that I knew him, and now look. "It was definitely special". Playing on the same team was something Jeter Downs would day dream about, he said.

Mookie Betts' blockbuster move from the Boston Red Sox to Los Angeles Dodgers was confirmed on Monday, while David Price is making the same switch. "But it doesn't mean anything if I don't go out and do my job". While scouts are split on his ability to remain at shortstop, the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder projects as an everyday second baseman with power.

"I don't care like what team you're from", Downs said.

He hit 29 home runs and 80 RBIs while batting.295 a year ago, while scoring a career-high 135 runs.

And who knows? Maybe he'll even do justice to his name. "It's kind of ironic that I have the name because that's exactly the person I model myself after".

"I was playing catch with him and I was just like, 'Wow, we're wearing the same uniform.' It's pretty surreal that things have turned around this way", he said. "[Jeter said] just that he's been watching and stuff like that".
