It's taken a while for it to get to the point of confirming that a store will open, largely due to recently-imposed regulations from the Indian government.

Cook made the revelation during Apple's annual shareholder meeting in Cupertino, discussing areas of potential growth for the business.

Apple's move into India, the second largest smartphone market in the world, has been expected for some time, but the announcement of a date was new. "Considering the importance of offline as a channel in a diverse country like India, where consumers love to touch, feel and experience the products, the stores are a very important touch-point for any consumer company", Singh told IANS. Nevertheless Mr Cook said India had wanted Apple to open its store with a local partner.

Apple sells its products through third-party stores in India at the moment. "Don't think we have something that we're not giving", he said, adding that Apple wouldn't create a back door to break into its devices.

"We like to do things our way", he said. But its sales lag competitors Samsung and Huawei.

Apple shareholders have voted down human rights measures related to China in the past. Notably, according to 9to5Mac, two shareholder proposals were voted down: One would have explored tying executive pay to sustainability efforts, and the other would have required the company to regularly report to its shareholders "whether [Apple] has publicly committed to respect freedom of expression as a human right".

Apple's (AAPL) expansion into China has proven crucial for the company, with the region bringing in the third largest amount of revenue by geography behind the US and Europe.

An Apple Inc shareholder proposal critical of the company's app removals in China received a relatively high level of support at the iPhone maker's annual meeting on Wednesday, enough to push the company to respond, experts said.

The measure was voted down but received almost 40% of the vote. Such apps allow users to bypass China's so-called Great Firewall aimed at restricting access to overseas sites.

The proxy advisory firms Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services have both recommended votes in favor of the measure, according to Reuters.

Mr Cook also addressed the impact that coronavirus is having on Apple's operations. He had said that Apple was "working with the government to seek approval to do that".

One investor asked why the company had not bought the rights to the upcoming reunion of the TV show Friends - which is slated for HBO Max.
