Garth Brooks faces backlash after Sanders mix-up online

Barry Sanders broke his silence on the ridiculous controversy on Friday, jokingly asking Brooks if he wanted to be his running mate.

One would think that wearing a Barry Sanders jersey in Detroit would be an automatic win and a tribute easily understood by all.

The Sanders nameplate on the jersey along with the number 20 - incorrectly interpreted as a reference to 2020 - was all it took for a huge social media meltdown by individuals who clearly aren't supporters of Sanders' potential candidacy.

Former Detroit Lions running back and NFL Hall of Fame member Barry Sanders walks with reporters during the Detroit Lions Huddle for 100 food drive event, in partnership with Kroger, at Ford Field in Detroit, on Thursday, October 10, 2019.

The Detroit Lions even got involved too. making Sanders' first official campaign graphic.

Others were well aware of who Barry Sanders is. Not because the people on Facebook were Bears, Packers, or Vikings fans, but instead, because people apparently mistook the jersey for an endorsement of Democrat presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

"Why why why does it have to involve politics!"

- "Good grief. Can't you just do what you get paid to do????"

"Nothing like supporting a communist to lose a few fans", one person wrote.

Outside of lighting the internet on fire with his decision to wear an American football jersey, Brooks is known as a successful country singer who has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards and won two.

"I had no idea you were a big freaking liberal socialist!" That a millionaire would like a socialist. So sad. We don't pay good money for anything other than to watch you perform.

No, Garth Brooks didn't go out of his way to show support for Sen.

"If this is for Bernie Sanders, I'm done with you", another user wrote.

"I would run any race with you", the country music superstar said.
