The death warrants were issued for the first time on January 7 and have been deferred three times earlier on the ground that the convicts were yet to exhaust all their legal remedies. They had ordered new ropes from Buxar Jail, made by prisoners there. They also flashed victory signs and stressed how the hanging is a landmark and will set a precedent for future cases in India.

Several "dummy executions" had been carried out by the hangman, Pawan Jallad, as petitions stalled the execution repeatedly. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Tihar central jail ahead of the execution on Friday morning, carrying placards to celebrate the historic moment. Four were convicted in 2013. In July 2019, the family of the rape victim sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India asking for help due to threats from the accused, and shortly after, the rape victim and her advocate were injured and two of her relatives killed in a truck collision.

Jail officials said the bodies were kept hanging for half an hour, a mandatory procedure after execution as per the prison manual.

I personally know women who have never reported being assaulted because they are ashamed, or because of the stigma associated with sexual crimes, or because they are afraid that they will not be believed.

In 2018, trial courts imposed 162 death sentences - the highest number in almost two decades - according to data collated by National Law University in Delhi.

Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh had been done at crack of dawn in Tihar prison, on the outskirts of the capital for the brutal killing of 23-year-old Jyoti Singh.

The pollution appeal comes shortly after another Indian woman was gang-raped and murdered last month, sparking protests and calls for reform of the country's notoriously slow legal system.

Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani told reporters, "I greet this day with aplomb that justice has finally been done to Nirbhaya".
