The letter, which is signed by about 50 intensive care physicians, ICU nurse practitioners and respirologists from across Alberta, calls on Jason Kenney to introduce strong new measures to stem the exponential growth of the pandemic's third wave.

Alberta has more than 23,000 active COVID-19 infections and has the highest case rate of any jurisdiction in North America.

There are now 671 people in the hospital, an increase of 13 from the previous day and 150 of those in intensive care, a decrease of four from Monday.

They say that would cause the system to crack and force doctors to decide which critical patients get care and which don't.

"The reason we are at this critical stage of the pandemic in Alberta, with record-high daily case counts and intensive-care numbers, is precisely because, for whatever reason, too many Albertans are ignoring the rules that we now have in place", he said.

As promised during Monday's press conference, Kenney is expected to present a package of new restrictions meant to bend the curve of transmission of COVID-19 during the live speech.

He said he was angered that a large group of people gathered on the weekend at a rodeo event in Bowden in flagrant violation of the restrictions in place, and that it exemplified a persistent and frustrating problem - that many Albertans simply are not following the rules.

The province added 1,743 new cases in the past 24 hours with a positivity rate of 11 per cent. The new cases included 1,900 cases of the more contagious variants of concern.

COVID-19 data from the province on Tuesday showed 255 active cases.
