Gunshot kills boy in Southern California road-rage attack

A 6-year-old boy was shot while his mother was driving on the highway Friday, local reports say.

"Not sure if there were any passengers in that white sedan but apparently there was a shot fired from that sedan into the silver vehicle, and unfortunately, the child that was seated in the right rear seat was struck", he said.

'It was an isolated road rage incident between the mom and another driver from a white sedan, ' California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera told KTLA-TV at the scene. "Unfortunately, the boy in the back seat was shot". "We're not sure how many rounds were fired, but a shot was sacked into the auto which struck the child", CHP Officer Florentino Olivera told the Daily News.

The shooting took place at around 8am on Friday on the northbound side of State Route 55 in the city of Orange.

"She heard her child scream and immediately stopped", Valdivia, remembering what the mother told him, in a separate interview with the Los Angeles Times. He said the driver of the white sedan shot into the back of the mother's Chevy Cruze sedan and then fled.

The boy was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital Orange County.

A short time later, an off-duty police officer arrived and performed CPR on the boy, Valdivia said.

"We are taking each of these incidents seriously and actively searching for those responsible", CHP Assistant Chief Donald Goodbrand said.

The suspect vehicle in Friday's deadly incident was described as a white sedan.

Reyes Valdivia and his wife had entered onto the freeway having already dropped off their two children at school when they spotted the mother's auto frozen on the shoulder.

"Even if they don't have video but maybe saw something that might be related, we would love that information, even if they don't think it's important", he said.

The 55 Freeway is shut down while police investigate the incident and Olivera said the freeway would remain closed until Friday evening.
