"We have a major political party in the country that's ignoring it - we're trying to solve a problem, they clearly don't want to sit down and talk about it", said Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, chairman of an appropriations subcommittee handling legislative branch security.

It is unclear just how many Senate Republicans will vote in favor of the commission once it is introduced in the upper chamber.

Collins was one of seven Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the January 6 attacks.

Republicans have said that while the GOP supports the U.S. Capitol Police and National Guard members who were deployed after the January 6 breach, they view the bill as partisan and drafted without consideration for how the funds would be spent.

The measure later passed, 252 to 175 - and was opposed by the Mahoning Valley's 6th District U.S. Republican Rep. Bill Johnson of Marietta - but not before a clip of Ryan's speech owned the social media sphere.

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell has said he will oppose the formation of a commission, meaning it is unlikely to pass the Senate.

While Trump won Florida, Ohio and North Carolina in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, past year he became the first Republican candidate to lose Georgia in a presidential election since George H.W. Bush in 1992.

'There's plenty of time to complete the work, ' she told host George Stephanopoulos.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), one of the filibuster's strongest supporters in the Democratic Party, seemed aghast that his GOP colleagues are on track to block the bill.

If approved, the bipartisan commission is expected to look at Trump's role in stoking the January 6 riot, including his persistent false claims in the months beforehand that the November election was "stolen".

"This is going to the 2022 midterms anyway, particularly if us as Republicans don't take ownership for what happened", Kinzinger said. What were the lies?'

"I think we're still pretty far apart, but this is the chance", Collins said.

'And it pains me to say it. It's not like I enjoy standing up and saying this'.

At the peak of Donald Trump's power, long-time Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu chose to break a cardinal rule of Israeli policy: he publicly took sides between America's Republicans and Democrats.

'The people they trust have either been silent or not told them the truth, ' Kinzinger said.

'He's right ― Donald Trump is the leader of the party.

He continued, "We have people scaling the Capitol, hitting the Capitol Police with lead pipes across the head and we can't get bipartisanship?"

According to the Washington Post, four Republican Senators have expressed openness to voting for the commission: Collins, Mitt Romney, Bill Cassidy and Mike Crapo.

Together, the package of bills stemming from the domestic assault by Trump supporters on the Capitol reminded some lawmakers of the changes that emerged from the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Trump had previously called on GOP lawmakers to oppose the commission. Two other officers died by suicide.

Officer Howard Liebengood, 51, who had been on the Capitol Police force since 2005, died by suicide less than a week after the riots.
