"We're so sorry this event happened", Hendricks said at a news conference.

Multiple people are dead in a mass shooting early Wednesday morning near a VTA light rail yard and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, according to authorities.

Update 10:42am: KRON4 reporting 7 VTA workers dead, 1 hospitalized in relation to this morning's shooting.

The incident occurred at a Valley Transportation Authority rail yard on West Younger Avenue near downtown San Jose.

The station reports that the shots broke out during an employee meeting for rail workers.

The archer is "no longer a threat", tweeted Mayor San Jose, and several are being treated.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said said that the shooter is "down", in a short Tweet. A gunman killed three people before killing himself at a popular garlic festival in Gilroy in July 2019. They said the residence caught fire before the shooting.

San Jose Fire spokeswoman Erica Ray said that officials are investigating "multiple" crime scenes related to the shooting.

"Our heart pains for the families and the coworkers", Liccardo said at a news conference.

Authorities have received information about explosive devices in the building and are now working to clear each room, Davis said.

The San Jose Police Department's bomb squad responded to that scene.

VTA light-rail service will be halted beginning at noon Wednesday until further notice, the agency announced on Twitter.

Police spokesman Russell Davis said the shooter had died and a railroad yard employee was among the victims.

The facility is a transit control center that stores trains and has a maintenance yard.

"I hope we also acknowledge that the status quo on gun violence in this country is unsustainable if we are truly committed to building a safe and just society", he said.
