During Leaders' Questions, Mr Kelly told the Dáil the Indian variant was spreading in Ireland and a number of people in the 60-70 age category had come to him anxious about a lower level of protection against this variant.

Labour TD Alan Kelly has called on the Government to bump down the gap between first and second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in the 60-70 age group.

Across Canada 12 people have died of VITT linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine but health officials still maintain the health risks remain low.

"What is really worrying though is that the first dose of AstraZeneca only provides 30 per cent protection, according to this very credible United Kingdom study".

Reminiscent of the first and second round registrations for the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, the third round opt-in was similarly met with several hiccups within seconds of it going "live" just after noon. That is three months.

Bates says they had to round up all 3,100 doses from across the province that is set to expire next Monday and needed to ensure no doses were spoiled.

At that time, Chief Health Protection and Emergency Preparedness Officer Dr. Jessica Hopkins said the risk of VITT associated with the vaccine in Ontario was one in 60,000.

Up to last of the last Friday there had been 73 cases of Indian variant diagnosed in Ireland. "I will be honest and say I would be slightly concerned that we don't minimise the level of changes unless there is a very clear public health argument in favour of it because the vaccination programme really is working now", he told Deputy Kelly.

Asked if this will play a part in the national vaccine rollout, the minister said that there should be no issues, since "the quantity we are expecting will help us towards the goal of vaccinating 65 per cent of the population using all other available vaccines".

"We're seeing an incredible show of real strength by the HSE in my mind - one of the real difficulties they have had is the constant changes in the vaccination programme, that makes it hard for them".

Meanwhile, the AstraZeneca vaccine was 60% effective against symptomatic disease caused by the variant.

"So I will present the argument to the relevant experts but I can't commit to taking up the advice", Mr Ryan said.

He added that South Sudan failed to use its doses because of a slow initial uptake by health workers, delays by Parliament to approve the vaccine's use, and a lengthy training of people to administer the vaccine.

"A fantastic effort by all staff, volunteers and Global Positioning System involved in Ireland's vaccine rollout".

"If you don't get the vaccine at this time, there will be more supply arriving for the 12-week mark as planned".

As of May 11th, some 1,922,913 doses of Covid vaccines had been administered in the State.
