Alberta announces rollout plan for second doses of COVID-19 vaccine

He added people who have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine should have their second dose by the end of the summer.

Anyone vaccinated in March or earlier can book their second dose starting (today) June 1.

"This will provide Albertans with even more protection as we get ready to be open for summer and get back to normal".

"We'll continue to prioritize first doses for anybody who wants to be vaccinated", said Kenney.

Each step of Alberta's three-step reopening plan is tied to vaccination rates. By 5 p.m., there were more than 24,000 people in the queue to book.

The province has delivered over 2.81 million doses of vaccine and just over 63 per cent of those eligible, 12 years of age and older, have received at least one shot.

The goal is for all Albertans, who wish to be so, to be fully immunized by September.

In following the recommendation from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization released Tuesday, Alberta will be offering either mRNA vaccines as a second dose for those whose first shot was AstraZeneca.

"Every Albertan who has received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be able to book their second dose by the end of the month", says Kenney.

Both options would count as having received a complete series of vaccine in Canada, Hinshaw said.

It's not clear how the latest guidance from NACI will affect the uptake of AstraZeneca. They will be joined by Health Minister Tyler Shandro and Dr. Verna Yiu, the Alberta Health Services president and chief executive officer.

Nearly all of the public health regulations are expected to be rescinded by early July.Hinshaw has said Alberta's reopening plan will succeed as long as Albertans continue to exercise caution, physically distance, mask-up and get their vaccinations as soon as possible.

Anyone vaccinated in April can start booking June 14, and those vaccinated in May can start booking June 28.

"You're getting a second dose way sooner than we had expected", he explained, asking for patience.

Albertans can book appointments at barbershops, hair salons and other personal wellness services starting today.

Alberta had 6,771 active COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Alberta also reported 209 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

In the United Kingdom, 9,000,000 second doses of AstraZeneca were used and only 15 VITT cases have been reported, according to Hinshaw. A total of 439 people were in hospital with the virus across the province including 133 in intensive care - dropping from 569 and 161, respectively, the previous Monday.
