Boy, 8, who went missing in Lake Erie found dead, police say

Police have located the body of an eight-year-old boy who went missing in Lake Erie on Saturday.

"I will not be answering any further questions today to give time for the family to grieve", Sanchuk said.

Ed Sanchuk announced on Twitter that the boy had been found deceased at about 2:45 p.m.by members of the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

The boy's body was found about 10 metres off the shore in the town, a popular destination for beachgoers across Norfolk County.

Police were called to an area near Turkey Point around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, after witnesses saw a boy swimming in the lake.

He said they are not releasing the identity of the boy pending the next of kin notification.

He thanked all the emergency crews and residents who assisted in the search. He had left a floating device and was trying to swim to shore, police say they were told.

Sanchuk thanked the OPP's Norfolk detachment, OPP Aviation Services, the Norfolk Marine Unit, paramedics, firefighters, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for their help.

A search commenced and resumed Sunday with the assistance of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

"There were a lot of boats in the water, a couple of helicopters and they also used a drone", Justin Simon said.

"It's a eerie feeling", Simon said.
