Officials and community members from Saskatchewan and across Canada are sharing messages of mourning after an RCMP officer was killed on-duty Saturday. During the course of the stop while outside of his police vehicle Const. Patton was struck and killed by the truck. Patton died on the scene.

The two suspects then left the scene and abandoned their truck in a rural area northeast of Francis. "Sending my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of [RCMP] officers Shelby Patton - know that I'm keeping you in my thoughts". Both the man and woman were arrested by 10 am thanks to the help of police dogs. "Also, to farmers in the area who provided assistance to our responding police officers who arrested the suspects". [His family] have lost a husband, son and brother.

Blackmore says Patton leaves behind a wife, who she spoke with this morning. "On behalf of all us [at Regina police] we stand beside you and offer support through this hard time".

Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore of the Saskatchewan RCMP says Patton's colleagues at the Indian Head detachment have been traumatized by his death.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit North has taken the lead on this investigation with the assistance of multiple RCMP Detachments, Collision Reconstruction and Forensic Identification Services, among other supporting units and partner agencies, according to Blackmore.

"The detachment commander actually mentioned to me, to create the ideal RCMP member, you would clone Shelby Patton", she said. We're just a small Prairie community. "Our grief is only matched by our tremendous gratitude to Constable Patton for his service, and to every police officer who serves and protects us every day".
