Queen Elizabeth enjoys scaled-down Trooping the Colour at Windsor Castle

Joe Biden on Sunday ended the first leg of his maiden overseas trip as U.S. president, inspecting a military guard of honour and taking tea with Queen Elizabeth II.

With a combined age of 173 years, they had experience (and wisdom) in droves.

Lt. Col. Guy Stone, who planned the queen's official birthday celebrations in Windsor Castle's quadrangle, said he wanted to create a "memorable and uplifting day" for the monarch.

Biden, who first met the queen in 1982 as a Democratic senator for DE, said following the meeting that she was "extremely gracious" and that she reminded him of his mother in terms of "the look of her and the generosity".

That was quite the compliment.

During her 69 years on the British throne, the longest reign of any English monarch, there have been 14 USA presidents, of which Elizabeth has met all bar Lyndon Johnson.

The monarch has now received four presidents at Windsor, with the Bidens following the Trumps in 2018, the Obamas in 2016, President George W. Bush and his wife in 2008 and the Reagans in 1982.

In glorious late afternoon sunshine and temperatures tipping 80 degrees, the latest instalment of the trans-Atlantic showstopper that is the meeting of Queen and president made for fabulous viewing.

In 2008, when then United States president George W Bush met with the monarch at Windsor, he enjoyed a traditional English afternoon spread of tea, small sandwiches and cakes in the White Drawing Room.

Mr Biden accompanied the Officer Commanding the Guard of Honour, Maj James Taylor, and Maj Gen Christopher Ghika to inspect the Honour Guard, before returning to the dais to watch the military march-past.

President Biden was suitably impressed.

"We had a great talk", he said.

White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs said Biden also remarked that the Queen had asked him about his upcoming visit with president Xi Jinping and president Vladimir Putin. "She was very gracious".

"I wish her all the very best".

Following the visit to Windsor, the first lady returns to Washington, D.C. The president travels on to Brussels for two days of meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Commission leaders, and then to Geneva, where he'll conclude his weeklong trip with a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It comes at the end of the G7 summit in Cornwall, where leaders of the world's biggest economies have discussed issues including vaccines and climate change.

However, last year, it was cancelled due to the pandemic and it was instead marked with a ceremonial tribute at Windsor. Pinned to her right side was an aquamarine brooch.

The couple landed in the grounds just before 5pm, a few minutes ahead of schedule, and were greeted by the Queen in the castle's quadrangle.

A Guard of Honour formed of the Queen's Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards gave a Royal Salute, and the USA national anthem was played. He took off his dark glasses to cast his beady eye.

She has since met all 14 elected USA leaders during her 69 years on the throne, except for Lyndon B Johnson.

On arrival to England last week, first lady Jill Biden told reporters that meeting the queen was "an exciting part of the visit for us".
