He says the first grand prize draw will take place the day the province enters Phase 3 of its pandemic recovery plan, adding more details will be announced in the coming days.

Vaccinations among eligible Albertans continued to inch closer to the 70 per cent reopening threshold Monday with 68.8 per cent of those aged 12 and over having now received a first shot.

The "Open for Summer Lottery" is being implemented to encourage more Albertans to get vaccinated.

Though this is a unique idea, Alberta is not the first province to give incentives for getting a vaccine in Canada. "Albertans have already responded in such a big way to our vaccine program, and we've been able to lift many health restrictions due to their efforts".

Registration closes a week after 70 per cent of eligible Albertans have received a first dose and the victor will be drawn when Stage 3 of Alberta's Open for Summer Plan begins, roughly a week later.

"But we also know that there are lots of people who want to get vaccinated or are thinking hard about it but they just haven't taken the plunge yet". "If you've been waiting to book, or you've been looking for a reason to get the shot, here it is".

A second draw, to be held August 31, will be open to Albertans who have received both shots.

More than 2.6 million first doses of vaccine have now been administered, including just over 790,000 second doses, representing 20.8 per cent of the eligible population.

3rd draw at the end of September will close September 23.

Albertans do not have to provide proof of vaccination upon entering the draw but need to prove that they have been vaccinated if they win the prize. This includes 19.2% of the population who are fully immunized with two doses of vaccine.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro called the lottery an investment in Albertans and Alberta's future.

According to the Alberta government, the province is now on target to hit the 70% milestone on June 18, at which point the two-week countdown to Stage 3 of the reopening plan will begin. "It's only fitting that we respond in kind with a once-in-a-lifetime event in Alberta".

Alberta is the second Canadian province to introduce a vaccine lottery.

The program will award three lucky residents with three major rewards, but in order for individuals to take part in the lotto, they must have received at least one shot of a vaccine and to be at the age of least 18 years old. Earlier this week, Manitoba announced it would be holding two lottery draws this summer with $100,000 prizes and $25,000 youth scholarships.
